Description of the Book:

The demands on the military operational decision maker because of the ever-increasing tempo of developing crises, and the explosion of information available, require the development of decision aids. The availability of powerful microcomputers with sophisticated input and output devices and networking capabilities makes the development of a command and control (C²) workstation possible. However, such a system will be virtually useless if it is not easy to learn and simple to use. This thesis examines current videodisc and computer assisted instruction technology for their potential usefulness to the U. S. Navy. The videodisc, with 54,000 addressable frames, can provide help functions during operations which overlay computer response with the desired response. This will result in an effective system which is easy to learn, easy to use, and easily customized by the user. The study proposes a design by which the potential of interactive videodisc technology can be realized in the auto-instructional mode for the Sun Workstation
