Description of the Book:

The 126 full-page engravings comprise an allegorical frontispiece incorporating the arms and a portrait bust of Archduke Ferdinand, and 125 full-length ports. of kings & rulers in armor standing within elaborate architectural niches. A brief biography of the subject of each port. appears in letterpress on its verso. All 126 engravings may be by Dominicus Custos after Giovanni Battista Fontana, both of whom signed the frontispiece; see their articles in Thieme-Becker. The frontispiece is dated [15]82, the 2nd port. (as bound in Getty copy) is dated 1586, the 11th and 12th ports. are dated 1595′, ‘Woodcut arms of Archduke Ferdinand with griffin supporters at foot of title. Text pages printed in the oval reserves of strapwork borders. Most common is a woodcut border with putti, pieces of armor and lion masks, but five similar engraved borders were also used, including one that is a copy of the woodcut border.

A head-piece and a tail-piece, foliated initials’, ‘Verso of frontispiece (1st leaf) is printed upside down in Getty copy’, ‘Bound after the 6 initial printed leaves of the Getty copy is an engraved portrait bust of Gustavus Adolphus II, King of Sweden, not part of the present work. The king is facing slightly to the right within an oval border lettered with the motto CUM DEO ET VIC-TRICIBUS ARMIS. Three lines of text beneath read: Serenissimus ac Potentissimus Princeps, Gustavus Adolphus D.G. / Suecorum, Gothorum, Vandalorumq. Rex, Magnus Princeps / Finnoniae, Esthoniae Careliaeq. Dux, Dominus Ingriae, &c. / Ao. Do. MDCXXXII. Platemark 40.7 x 29.7 cm. The verso is blank’, ‘Binding: old sprinkled calfskin, tooled in gilt on edges of boards and spine, title in gilt on spine label. Page edges red’, “At upper left-hand corner of front pastedown is Theodore Besterman’s calligraphic label, signed in the plate by P.S.
