L. Kaiser R. G. Shook H. E. Haney M. J. Walsh J. R. Gorsuch F. G. Peters 1. At the request of Mr. John W. Polk, Director, Division of Communications and Computer Operations, Energy Research and Development Administration, ODP personnel met with computer personnel and consultants from ERDA on 14 July 1976 to discuss computer job scheduling. ERDA personnel described the computer configuration and problems they were encountering in managing and scheduling jobs in a mixed batch and on-line environment. 2. Mr. described automated scheduling and load balancin aci i ies available in IBM systems software. He recommended that ERDA take full advantage of these facil- ities rather than attempting to balance computer loading by manual scheduling of jobs.
3. Mr. described the procedures used in ODP for production scheduling of jobs. Mr. 0 gave a copy of ODP documentation standards to Mr. Shook. STATINTL 4. ERDA personnel were encouraged to follow up this initial meeting with telephone calls or additional meetings if they thought CIA would be of any further help. In an on-line environment, the problems of managing and scheduling job-mix become far more complex. In order to assure that we maintain on-line system reliability and responsive- ness while continuing to provide good “turnaround” service on batch jobs, we are seeking advice regarding scheduling and load balancing techniques and pitfalls.
We understand that your staff has considerable experience in such matters and would be willing to discuss the subject with members of my staff. With your permission, we would like to arrange a meeting with your staff and the personnel on the enclosed list to discuss computer job scheduling. Please contact Mr. Richard Shook, 353-4602, to arrange a mutually convenient date and to obtain any additional information that is needed. Sincerely, ‘John W. I’m not certain they could optimize an EAM shop. I suggested to the ERDA situation is a potential scandal of ineptness for both the Government and IBM. Reply. There is no IBM SE on the account, because ERDA said that such a person was not needed. The IBM Marketing Representative will be going to ERDA and strongly recommending (insisting) that an IBM SE (or several) come in and help them set up their center.
