One of the goals of the recent reorganization of the Intelligence Directorate was to broaden the scope of our contacts with the academic community and other sources of analytical support outside the intelligence community. The Center for Policy Support has been given this respon- sibility and has a full-time Coordinator and Assistant Coordinator to devise and implement a program. This effort will. build upon the work of the previous Coordinators for Academic Relations within the Directorate. It will, however, have a broader focus in that we will be looking beyond, the academic community for analytical support.
We also intend to be more discriminating in our relations with the academic community by concentrating on relationships that could provide us a. return. 2. We will focus this program on contacts with graduate students, graduate faculties, academic associations, foreign affairs research centers, technical research laboratories, and economic research groups primarily to improve, our know- ledge of who is doing work that could meet some of our require- ments. These contacts also will identify skilled people who might be willing to undertake specific analytical tasks for us. We hope that controlled disclosure of the nature of our work will improve the public understanding of the intelligence process. It should be understood, however, that the emphasis of this new effort is on the identification of methodologies, research, and people who can assist us in our immediate mission. The recruiting and public relations aspects of this effort are strictly side benefits. aaY.a j’3a~c Approved For Release 2006/10/18: CIA-RDP86B00985R000300080040-7 Approved For Release 2006/10/18: (1IA-R DP86B00985R000300080040-7 19AL 3.
