There have been a couple of books that have come to my attention in the last few months, and perhaps your attention, too. The first one was called The CIA and the Cult of Intelligence, co-authored…well one of the authors was Vector Marchetti who was a guest a few weeks ago. And, more recently, is a book published by Simon and Schuster called Tr7ithout Cloak or Dagger, It is by r~iiles Copeland, whose first book, The Game of Nations, received quite a bit of acclaim when it was written.
And, like The Game of Nations, Miles’ newest book also deals with espionage, and more specifically, the CIA. ti^7hy such a sudden interest in th.e CIA? Was it because of Watergate, Miles? COPELA~dD; No, I don’t think it was that. I think both Victor and I started writing our books because it was the time for us as individuals to write the books. I kink it’s coincidental that Watergate came slang and sort of `2~K_ into highlight. some. of the features of the intelligence business. But, why I wrote the book at this time? I’m retired. I’ve sort of gone out of business. I`m sitting in my little house up outside of Oxford, England, and I have -time to write. So I just pulled together this boak far purely personal reasons. KAPLAa~I: Victor Marchetti’s book, The CIA and the Cult of Intel- ligence, received notoriety because it had been expunged by court orb There are gaping blank spaces in his book.
COPELAND: Sherman, I can’t tell you what I would give to have the-CIA to have done the same thing to me. And there’s Victor complaining. He says i gave away ten times as much secret informa- tion as he did, and there he had all this trouble. And, my Gad, Approved For Release 2005/08/22: CIA-RDP$8-013508000200810010-4 OFF1C ~!3 IN: NL’W YORK ‘ QETROtT ? LOS ANGSLL?3 ? WA3HIN GTO N, D. G ? NEW ENGLAND ? CMICAQO
