Description of the Book:

The experimental data of Bircumshaw and Newman are analyzed in terms of a linear rate of progression of the interface between residue and undecomposed crystal. Linear decomposition rates corresponding to given temperatures are derived directly from the maximum rate portions of the sigmoid curves of product pressure versus time. It is proposed that in the temperature range 220 to 280 deg C, the decomposition interface travels exclusively through the disordered material between the mosaic blocks of the crystal and does not penetrate the interior of these blocks. Absolute rate treatments in the manner of Laidler, Glasstone, and Eyring are presented for each of the two crystal forms (orthorhombic and cubic). These treatments are similar to those proposed for the sublimation of ionic solids and the vaporization of solid ammonium chloride, respectively
