Maps presented in three recently published Atlases, showing the sea surface temperature of the Eastern Indian Ocean, are compared. The Atlases are the U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office Atlas (1967); the World Ocean Atlas, Vol. I (1976); and the World Ocean Atlas, Vol. II (1977). The SST given by each atlas differed from that given by the other two atlases by up to 2 C. The SST maps in the World Ocean Atlas, Vol. II (1977) appear to be based on the most comprehensive and recent data, hence are probably the most reliable. (Author
