Description of the Book:

This study examines the formation of a front over a mountain due to a pre-existing deformation field. The dependent variables are assumed to be independent of x. The hydrostatic Boussinesq equations are used with no diffusion of heat or momentum. A modified coordinate system similar to Phillips’ sigma system is used. The model is bounded at the top by a rigid plane and periodic boundary conditions are used in the horizontal. The solutions show the formation of a front within a finite period of time that tilts toward the cold air. The frontogenesis experiments with a mountain of wavelength 3600 km showed negligible topographic effects. (Author
