Description of the Book:

This review deals with techniques for trenching, pipe burial, and cable burial. It is directed to burial of undersea pipes and cables, but there is necessarily continual reference to related work on dry land. Emphasis is given to trenching and burying in hard ground and rock. There are repeated references to frozen ground and permafrost, since CRREL has done a good deal of quantitative investigation of permafrost excavation. ‘Dry land’ permafrost is quite similar to unjointed rock, and therefore the permafrost results are relevant to the cutting of some sedimentary rocks. However, undersea permafrost is not expected to be well bonded within a few feet of the water interface, and it is probably much weaker than dry land frozen ground. Keywords: Underwater construction; Plows; Dredges; Water jets; Explosives
