Description of the Book:

An ice keel program that was described at the Spring 1985 meeting (paper z7) is used to investigate the acoustic scattering properties of ice keels at high frequency. Keels are modeled as parabolas. Sample sets of keels are generated using published distributions of spacing and sizes ((O.I. Diachok, J. Acocust. Soc. Am. 59, 1110-1120 (1976)). A large number of rays are directed towards the keel set and the emerging rays are collected into angular bins. Reflections from and refraction through the ice are employed. Specular reflection coefficients computed in this manner are similar to published results (ibid Diachok) above 3 deg grazing angle. No significant specular reflection is found at lower grazing angles. The scattered rays tend to be directed predominantly into angles near the specular angle
