Description of the Book:

AGORs 27 and 28 are new Ocean Class research vessels being built at the Dakota Creek Industries Inc. (DCI) shipyard in Anacortes, Washington, for the U.S. Navy’s Office of Naval Research (ONR). Delivery of AGOR 27 is scheduled for late 2014, and delivery of AGOR 28 is scheduled for early 2015. AGOR 27, first of the class, will be named R/V Neil Armstrong, and AGOR 28, second of the class, will become the R/V Sally Ride. The two ships will be owned by ONR upon delivery to the government. ONR has competitively selected two institutions to operate the ships under renewable charter-party agreements. Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution will operate the AGOR 27, and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography will operate the AGOR 28. The Neil Armstrong Class ships will be outfitted with a multi-drive, low-voltage diesel electric propulsion system. This upgraded propulsion system will help maintain efficiency while lowering maintenance and fuel costs.

Some technologically advanced features of the vessels include an underwater acoustic positioning system, a unique hull form that prevents bubbles from entering the sonar area, a central cooling system to provide HVAC, and dual-controllable propellers with variable speed motors for increased efficiency. This biweekly progress report provides information on the shipbuilding status of the R/V Sally Ride and the R/V Neil Armstrong
