Since the end of the Second World War, the development of Nigeria has been marked by rapid commercial, manufacturing and urban growth concentrated in three main areas: (1) the southwest, the port-city and Federal capital of Metropolitan Lagos; (2) the north, a central close-settled zone which embraces the cities of Kano, Zaria and Kaduna; and (3) the south-east, a well-knot network of urban places which is dominated by Port Harcourt, Onitsha, Aba and Emigre. The first part of this survey, “The Need for Urban and Regional Planning,” examines urbanization and migration, consequences of urbanization and townward migration, spatial disparities in population growth, and disparities and problems of economic development. Part II, “The Governmental Response to Problems of Urban and Regional Development,” discusses the federal, state and local responses to urbanization problems in Western Nigeria, Lagos State, Northern and Eastern Nigeria. Part III, “University Training and Research in Urban and Regional Planning,” presents a look at urban and regional studies, and town planning.
