Fifteen married couples, who, by their definitions, share parenting responsibilities, were interviewed. The most frequently cited reason for this practice was that the wife was dissatisfied with the limiting role of homemaker and wanted to be outside the home and away from the children part of the time, in order to pursue a career or add variety to her life. With the wife’s role expanded into the community, husbands took up more of the child-rearing burden and much of the housework. The couples noted the benefits and problems of such an alternative parenting system, and offered throughts on how society could change to accommodate such patterns.
