This guide was developed to accompany a series of 16 seminars on parenting offered by the Brookhaven College Child Development Program to help meet the concerns and needs of working parents in a time of changing lifestyles and family patterns. In addition to providing an overview of each seminar topic, the guide contains informational essays and/or guidelines on: (1) developing effective parenting skills; (2) children and television; (3) pros and cons of various types of child care arrangements; (4) determining the quality of care by looking at the caregiver; (5) positive and negative aspects to look for when visiting a day care center; (6) characteristics of appropriate child care facilities; (7) selecting toys; (8) the values of play; (9) the physical growth and development of young children; (l0) Piaget’s stages of cognitive development; (11) Erikson’s eight stages of man; (12) Kohlberg’s theory of moral development; (13) communication skills for parents; (14) developing responsibility in children; (15) age appropriate behaviors; (16) helping children identify feelings; (17) building a positive self-concept; (18) features of a good self-concept; (19) sources of vitamins and what they are needed for; (20) children’s health status; (21) safe toys for children; and (22) “child-proofing”
