Description of the Book:
Part of a nine-country cross-cultural research project designed to answer the question “Why do people want children?”, this study examined the social, psychological, socioeconomic, and demographic determinants of fertility in Turkey. A nationally representative sample of 2305 married persons (1762 females and 543 males) were interviewed at length. Findings showed that socioeconomic and cultural factors affect the perceptions, values, and attitudes of people and are reflected in relations between spouses. Values, perceptions, and attitudes, in turn, as social-psychological mechanisms, affect fertility behavior. Analysis of the cross-sectional data suggested that with socioeconomic development and especially with increased education, children’s economic value decreases, whereas their psychological value increases. Correlational and regression analysis also revealed that where children’s economic value assumed importance, son preference was prevalent, women’s status in the family was low, the old-age security value of children was high, and fertility was high.
