Description of the Book:
This report on the second Census of Secondary School Course Offerings, conducted in 1982, provides data on offering and enrollments in the Illinois public schools grades 7 through 12, and updates the first Census of 1977. Data were collected for 489 junior high schools (82% of the total) and 719 high schools (99% of the total). Discussed in the report are demographic characteristics, including enrollment statistics; the typical mathematics program in junior high schools and in senior high schools, including course offerings; and sex-related information on student enrollment in mathematics, including analyses by course. The summary indicated that a larger proportion of students was enrolled in mathematics courses in 1982 than in 1977. The mathematics curriculum at the high school level continues to follow a traditional pattern, with elementary algebra and plane and solid geometry the most commonly offered courses. Remedial mathematics courses are more likely to be found in large high schools than in small ones.
Mathematics enrollment was greater for females than for males between 1977 and 1982. A notable increase was found in Computer Mathematics offerings and enrollment. (MNS
