Description of the Book:

A summary is presented of findings of the Survey of Degrees and Other Formal Awards Conferred between July 1, 1985 and June 30, 1986, which is part of the Higher Education General Information Survey (HEGIS). Data are provided on the number of earned degrees and other formal awards conferred, by level of award, program area or field of study, and sex of degree recipients. For 1985-1986, the number of degrees awarded at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels remained fairly stable over the previous year. For the first time in 15 years, the total number of first-professional degrees decreased. The decrease appears to be due primarily to a substantial drop in the largest field, law, as well as in two of the smaller health fields, dentistry and optometry. Degrees in medicine stayed about the same, while those in chiropractice medicine increased 27.6% over the previous year. Information on the survey methodology is included.
