Description of the Book:

A study examined distance education systems and practices in the major areas of the world (Australia, Asia, Africa, South and Central America, North America, and Eastern and Western Europe). A long version of the survey instrument was originally mailed to 1,640 institutions, organizations, and government agencies, and a short version was mailed to 741. An overall response rate of 21.4 percent was obtained (with response rates ranging from 3.3 percent for Eastern Europe to 40.0 percent for Australia). The study yielded data on the general characteristics of the distance education institutions and their budgets. As expected, widening educational services to include new groups of adult learners was cited as the most important goal of the institutions studied. A great number of educational media were being used and surprisingly large sums are allegedly being invested in media development. There was great interest in developing and maintaining student independence, as well as in learner friendliness (using personal counseling and tutorial services to enhance students’ success).
