Description of the Book:

A collection of papers addresses three aspects of the learning and use of French as a second language in Africa. The first two chapters look at the sociolinguistic dimension; the first examines the language question and language consciousness in parts of Africa where French was once or is still used as an official or “second” language. The second deals with aspects of French language learning by children. Chapter 3 is concerned with the historical dimensions of French language learning and use. The perspective assumed is both historical and comparative, extending to pidginization and creolization as processes of linguistic evolution. Chapters 4 and 5 discuss methodological aspects of research on French outside of France. Chapter 4 describes French language contact in both North and West Africa. Chapter 5 examines the notions of linguistic interference, linguistic variety, and French language contact. (Author/MSE
