Description of the Book:
To assist the transition from novice teacher to skilled, experienced teacher, mentorship programs are being developed and refined. One such program has been developed and is currently being implemented and evaluated through the collaborative efforts of teacher educators from the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minnesota, and staff from a suburban district in Bloomington, Minnesota. The program, one of 11 sites funded in 1988 by the Minnesota State Department of Education, provides for specific training, support, and frequent formal and informal contacts that stimulate professional growth and have positive effects on the learning environment. In January 1989, 26 mentors and 29 mentees were surveyed regarding the program’s effects on the learning environment. All respondents agreed that the program has positively affected the learning environment. Both mentors and mentees indicated an increase in the use of new teaching technologies, increased positive self-image, greater awareness of students’ learning, development of motivational techniques, and more effective use of classroom management techniques.
Other improvements included increased use of enrichment activities, enhanced professionalism, improved classroom communication, and overall use of better instructional practices. (17 references) (MLH
