Description of the Book:
This publication was designed to assist those who are establishing or redesigning programs aimed at providing better prepared middle grades teachers. Following the prologue, which provides the background of the project, the first chapter looks at teacher education; endorsement, licensure, certification, and accreditation; and collaboration to improve middle level teacher education. The second chapter examines professional forums, publications, and the National Middle School Association (NMSA)’s joint relationship with National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The third chapter explores exemplary practices in undergraduate studies, masters programs, initial licensure beyond the bachelors degree, specialist programs, and doctoral programs. The fourth chapter focuses on the future of middle level education. The 1995 Revised NMSA/NCATE Guidelines are discussed in the epilogue. A resource list of contributing colleges and universities is provided. Appendices include: (1) “Original NMSA/NCATE-Approved Teacher Education Curriculum Guidelines”; (2) “Revised NMSA/NCATE-Approved Teacher Education Curriculum Guidelines”; and (3) “Comparison of the Original and Revised NMSA/NCATE-Approved Teacher Education Curriculum Guidelines.” (Contains 52 references.)
