Description of the Book:
This paper examines the case study as a research method which can be used by those involved in research relating to school libraries. It highlights the key issues in selecting the case study as a research method as well as the advantages and limitations of the case study method. The paper also provides an example of a case study carried out in a secondary school in Scotland. The case study investigates the role of the school librarian as Internet mediator in a school with a sophisticated information technology network, an experienced and technologically up-to-date school librarian, and teachers who have an interest in using World Wide Web resources in the curriculum. The case study examines the views of both teachers and librarian in relation to the future use of CD-ROMs which are produced in the school and which contain downloaded WWW sites of curricular interest. The case study also examines the issues which arise when teaching and information professionals work together to seek to create and exploit new curriculum-related information sources.
The case study has limitations as a method, but does provide an in depth study of particular cases which, while not being generalizable to populations, can be generalizable to aspects of theory. The study described demonstrates the importance of posing research questions and using open-ended interviews to gather data. (SWC
