Description of the Book:
Career education and guidance (CEG) are schools is primarily concerned with helping students make and implement career decisions. Evidence from motivation, self-efficacy, expectancy-value, achievement motivation, and attribution theory suggests that CEG may helps enhance pupil motivation and attainment. In terms of those theories, CEG can help young people accomplish the following: understand the relationship between educational goals and access to occupational goals; clarify valued outcomes; set attainable educational goals; and understand the relationship between current educational effort and performance to achievement of educational and career goals. CEG may therefore help pupils develop a sense of purpose, challenge their inhibiting beliefs, form “moderately challenging goals” with high intrinsic motivational force, and minimize entry into educational options resulting in diminished effort and persistence. Better studies of CEG are available in the United States. Compared with U.S. CEG programs, CEG programs in the United Kingdom are defined more narrowly and begun later.
Consequently, the United Kingdom needs its own research on the effects of CEG. (MN
