Description of the Book:

This resource guide is a collection of activities and lessons that educators can use to promote the 1999 Special Olympics in North Carolina and to increase understanding and acceptance of individuals with mental retardation. Three basic themes are repeated throughout the guide: individuals with mental retardation are valued, contributing members of society; Special Olympics participants are athletes and should be recognized for their many and varied accomplishments; and international competition provides opportunities for everyone involved to share the Olympic sprit and transcend all boundaries of culture, geography, and nationality. The guide has four major divisions: elementary school lessons, middle school lessons, high school lessons, and special adapted lessons for students with unique needs. At the beginning of each section a brief description and a cross-reference chart is provided to help content area teachers select appropriate activities and lessons. Each lesson specifies what materials and equipment are needed to conduct the activities or lesson, and most lessons include extension activities that encourage further study.

At the back of the manual is an appendix section that provides teachers and students with additional information about Special Olympics North Carolina. A 7-minute promotional videotape recording is also included. (CR
