Description of the Book:
This study examined the relationship between the time taken to obtain a baccalaureate degree and the type of financial aid received and/or student employment. Institutional data were analyzed for 4,403 nontransfer students attending a large urban public university. Data sets analyzed included: a longitudinal student master file, the undergraduate student persistence files, the student financial assistance data files, and the university’s payroll files. Students were classified into eight subgroups based upon sources of financial support. Results indicated that: (1) students in the “loans only” subgroup took the least registered time to complete their programs; (2) students who received gift aid and were employed had the shortest elapsed time-to-degree and their academic performance was better overall than other groups; and (3) student employment appeared to delay graduation by about one-half semester on average.
