Description of the Book:

The purpose of this study was to identify: the success and retention rates of basic skills students, and the rates of basic skills students’ progress from basic skills courses to college level courses, and ultimately, transfer level courses. The study chose its cohorts from the semester of fall 1994. Essentially, four cohorts were identified: students enrolled in ENGL 255, students enrolled in MATH 256 and 256 (S); students in READ 205 and READ 255, and students in ESL 200 and ESL 201. For each basic skills cohort, the study tracked its progress from basic skills courses in fall 1994 on to the next courses in line, following the normal sequence of courses. Descriptive statistics were reported for all of the tracking. For each cohort’s performance in each course, the study reported the number of students in the class, the grades they received, and the success and retention rates.

The study also compared the cohort’s performance to the general population that was enrolled in the course in fall 1994. Wherever applicable, the tables in this study used a comparison group – “general” population enrolled in the same courses. Includes an appendix of longitudinal analysis retention and success rates in English, math, reading, and ESL. (VWC
