Description of the Book:
This report presents data on college costs from the College Board’s Annual Survey of Colleges for the 2000-2001 academic year, as well as trends in costs for the past 30 years and analyses of college prices in relation to family income and available financial aid. Twelve tables and fourteen figures present such data as average fixed charges for undergraduates, sample undergraduate budgets, average student expenses by College Board region, tuition and fees by region and by institution type in constant and current dollars, and cost of attendance at public and private institutions as a percentage of family income. Data highlights include the following: (1) average tuition at public four-year institutions is $3,510, an increase of 4.4 percent; (2) the West offers the lowest tuition rates at public four-year institutions; (3) room and board charges are between 4.2 and 5.1 percent higher than 1 year ago; (4) over the past 10 years, after adjusting for inflation, average public four-year tuition and fees rose 51 percent; (5) almost half of students attending four-year institutions pay less than $4,000 in tuition and fees; and (6) enrollment in postsecondary education has been rising for all income groups.
