Description of the Book:

As part of a series of reports designed to support the implementation of Proposition 10: The California Children and Families Act and to provide comprehensive and authoritative information on critical issues concerning young children and families in California, this report provides county-level commissioners and their staff with information about why child care quality is important and recommendations for how to improve it, focusing on structural remedies for improving child care quality. Following introductory comments regarding the state-level goals relating to child care and early education and defining child care services, the report reviews research about the positive effects of quality child care on child development and the kinds of efforts that have been found to improve child care quality. The report also provides information on the availability of quality child care in California and discusses improvement of quality through regulation, training, and accreditation. The report concludes with recommendations to improve the child care system in California, including improving provider compensation, improving training by strategic targeting, and improving the infrastructure through long-term, systematic improvements.
