Description of the Book:

Hugh Burkett, director of The Center for Comprehensive School Reform and Improvement, recently was asked to give the keynote speech at On the Right Track 4, an annual school improvement symposium for California school practitioners. In this month’s newsletter, Dr. Burkett shares highlights from his remarks. He sets forth six things that should never be done while trying to improve schools and what he has learned from doing every one of them. They are: (1) Do not depend solely on the principal to lead the school; (2) Do not rely on selection strategies to build a teaching staff; (3) Do not assume that writing an aligned curriculum will improve teaching; (4) Steven Covey’s “Start With the End in Mind” is good advice, but do not forget the middle; (5) Do not lose focus; and (6) Do not neglect personal accountability. [This document was produced by The Center for Comprehensive School Reform and Improvement, administered by Learning Point Associates in partnership with the Southwest Educational Development Laboratory (SEDL) and WestEd, under contract with the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education of the U.S.
