Cover title’, ‘”May 2005″–Colophon’, ‘Every day, law enforcement officers across the state serve and protect the people of Illinois, often putting their lives on the line. Sadly, some of these brave men and women die in the line of duty. To honor these courageous men and women and salute our fallen police officers, an Illinois Police Memorial was erected on the northeast grounds of the Capital Complex and dedicated in October 1990. For more than two decades police officers from across the state have gathered in Springfield for the annual Illinois Police Memorial ceremony in May to honor their fallen comrades, whose names are added to the memorial. To help honor our police officers, my office [that of Secretary of State, Jesse White] offers Police Memorial License Plates. Proceeds from the sale of these plates help support the maintenance and annual commemoration of the Illinois Police Memorial as well as provide scholarships for children of police officers killed in the line of duty
