Holograph, signed with initials’, ‘Letter written in pencil’, ‘Upon his arrival in Providence, William Lloyd Garrison was greeted by Henry and Charlotte Anthony. He was going to get shock treatment from Dr. Dow but was deterred by the rain and wind. Garrison writes: “In the afternoon, I went with Mary Townsend to Dr. Hall’s church, to my old friend, Rev. John Parkman, of Boston. His discourse was very brief, and was merely prefatory to the communion service.” Garrison tells of the activities of the Anthony family and gives the names of those who came to call on him, including Julia Adie who came for tea and spent the evening. He gives instruction regarding the payment of bills
