Holograph, signed’, ‘This letter is signed by both Mrs. Mary L. Phillips and Caroline L. Phillips. They are sending a few small items for the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery fair. Their efforts to enlist the ladies of Mansfield in the preparation of a large box of gifts proved “almost a perfect failure.” Some preferred to give to the Connecticut fair, while “others did know about the propriety of Ladies being associated with men in such a cause & others were frightened at the cry of Garrison, Women rights, and Non resistance, no Government, & so on
