Description of the Book:
Holograph, signed’, ‘May’s handwriting on the envelope reads, “Rec’d Feb. 12, 1855.” His handwriting on the letter reads, “Extract of a letter from Rev. S. A. Steinthal. [Return copy to S. M. Jr.].”‘, “This letter was sent with another letter to May that was written by S. Alfred Steinthal’s father-in-law, Franklin Howorth. See Ms.B.1.6 v.5, p.35”, ‘Title supplied by cataloger’, ‘Steinthal encloses an explanation from his father-in-law for the failure of the box of contributions from Bury, England, to arrive in time for to the Boston Anti-Slavery Fair. Steinthal says that he wrote a long letter to William Lloyd Garrison. He mentions an article on a book about British Guiana that dealt with the emancipation of the slaves and appeared in “The Press,” the official newspaper of D’Israeli’s political party. Steinthal refers to a comment made by John Bale concerning the increase of the slave population as shown by the census.
He says that Bale hints at a possible servile war. Steinthal mentions the lectures of Dr. Solger
