Description of the Book:
These books show the tally of votes cast in the precincts of each district for each office by Democratic Party voters. There are no tally books for Republican voters in the collection as there were few Republican Party members in Levy County and most of those voters were African American. As in most Southern counties during the period covered by these records, the Democratic Party, the party of the vast majority of white voters in the South, worked to prevent African Americans from voting’, ‘Electronic reproduction’, ‘These tally books are titled “First and Second Choice Tally Book.” According to Florida law, each county was to use two tally books to show the results of an election. The books contained the name of each candidate, the number of votes cast for each candidate, and, if first and second choice ballots were voted, the county officials noted the number of first choice votes received by each candidate and the number of second choice votes.
The officials then certified that the tally books were correct and sent one book to the supervisor of voting registration and one to the county judge. Levy County was established in 1845 and named for David Levy Yulee, a prominent Florida politician and businessman.
